RE: EXPIRED TUBES

The Management of the Barbados Reference Laboratory has raised concerns regarding the increased submission of samples in expired collection tubes and/or containers.

This continued practice compromises the quality of measurement of analytes which can lead to potential erroneous results.

Additives are present in these sample collection tubes to either speed up or inhibit clotting, or in some cases to preserve the integrity of the sample.

The Laboratory’s College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation is dependent on strict adherence to International Standards which includes the appropriate use of sample collection tubes and containers, it must be noted that it is also a factor which considerably affects the high level of patient care which both you the Clinician and us the Laboratory seek, as the hallmark of our service.

Against this background we kindly ask that you follow these recommendations:

1. Check expiration dates on all collection tubes/containers. If expired, please IMMEDIATELY discard, and contact the Barbados Reference Laboratory for delivery of new supplies.
2. Place all expired tubes to be discarded directly into the garbage or in a receptacle labeled “TO BE DISCARDED”. This receptacle should not be easily accessible in the sample collection area and can be given to any of BRL’s couriers to be discarded.
3. Prior to collection of samples, ALWAYS recheck the expiration date on ALL the tubes needed for collection.
4. If there are no suitable tubes available for collection, you are free to direct your patient to one of our collection centers. (Belleville, Sandy Crest, Manor Lodge, Maxwell). Phlebotomy fee is $20.00.
